Ijen crater Blue Fire: Hidden in the heart of East Java, Indonesia, the Ijen Crater is one of the few places on Earth where you can witness a rare and mesmerising phenomenon: blue flames dancing under the stars. But how hot are these flames?

How Hot Are the Blue Fire at Ijen crater?

The Science Behind the Blue Fire

The blue fire of Ijen Crater isn’t typical fire. It’s not caused by burning wood or grass — it’s the result of sulfuric gases igniting when they come into contact with air. These gases escape through cracks in the volcanic surface at extremely high temperatures.

🔥 The temperature of the blue flames at Ijen can reach up to 600°C (1,112°F).

That’s hotter than the melting point of lead and hot enough to instantly ignite the gases as they emerge from the Earth.

Why Are the Flames Blue?

Unlike orange or yellow flames we’re used to, the blue flames at Ijen appear that color due to the combustion of sulfuric gases. These gases burn with a high-temperature blue glow, especially visible in the dark of night. You won’t see the flames during daylight — this is why most tours begin around midnight to ensure visitors arrive at the crater by 2–3 a.m.

Is It Safe to Get Close?

The Ijen blue fire is stunning, but it’s also toxic and dangerous without proper precautions. Sulfur fumes are hazardous when inhaled, and the rocky trail to the crater can be slippery. This is why local guides always provide gas masks and encourage visitors to follow the safe hiking path.

How to Witness the Blue Flames at Ijen

To experience this natural wonder:

  • Start from Banyuwangi or Bondowoso, or join a tour from Bali or Surabaya.

  • Gas mask (usually included in tours)

  • Warm clothing

  • Flashlight or headlamp
